World Goa Day 2003.

World Goa Day was commemorated in New York with a Goan colloquium at New Rochelle College on June 21, 2003. The same event will be celebrated on the other coast of the USA over the July Fourth weekend. This is a celebration in each Goan community across the world to reinforce in us our Goan heritage. Some Goans say they do not need reinforcement, "They are Goans yesterday, they are Goans today and they will be Goans tomorrow". Others are more patriotic and may say, "zolmolam Goemcar anim mortolom Goemcar" translated to "I was born a Goan and will die a Goan". These are great maxims. We however need to take these slogans and put them into actions.   

First in our own mind, we need to separate our good values and manners and our religion from being Goan. Hopefully all decent human beings throughout the world have good values, manners and a religion. But not  all are Goans! Hence we have to move beyond being good to asking ourselves, what makes us and our community different from the good Johnny Nextdoor?  To highlight that difference of our community (from others) and to publicize it to the world - in India and in all the countries where Goans live - we need to get together and speak in one voice. That is what World Goa Day is all about. And a string of World Goa Day celebrations around the world is a sign of our unity and our strength in our (political and geographical) diversity and in our Goan Diaspora. In fact this unity with diversity can be our forte and our asset. Every year we select a topic to broadcast. First the broadcasts should start at home - to us.   This year due to the efforts of World Goa Day, our Konkani language has received a big boost. It is difficult (but not impossible) to identify a community without its own language. Konkani is being used on the net. Soon we may have (if we do not already have) a software which has a Konkani dictionary. The lack of a standard spelling is what I have found to be the most challenging about writing in Konkani. Goan writers will be recognized and encouraged. Goan talent will be stimulated. These are your and my kids and grandchildren. Rome was not built in a day. Every mile starts with the first step. Like the relay marathon this generation of Goans should leave Goa and Goans in a better shape than our parents left it - language, geography, history, culture, education, socio-economic status etc.  Here is an example of what can be done with all working together. This was a recent posting on the Goanet. "Anyone out there interested on taking Konkani to the computer? In the Free Software world, this is possible... and any initiative is welcome. Also, diverse scripts could be got working too for the language which has between 2-5 million speakers (estimates vary) and is written in at least five scripts. G Karunakar ,  that amazing resource for Indic solutions, says the starting point for any  translation is the Gnome glossary. It's a collection of the most commonly  occurring tech terms, which are used a lot in translations. Says he:  'Work becomes easy if you have this done first. Then the .po files can  be taken up (next)'."   World Goa Day organizers are not asking much. They are just asking our participation, interest and support in the celebration. I personally would suggest that every Goan commit to spend 100 of what ever their currency is (or more) in Goa every year. Our slogan should be "Buy Goan" songs, CD, tapes, books, paintings, handicraft etc. for our own personal use. Next "Gift Goan" to our neighbors and friends where we live. It will reward us hundred fold because these recipients will know and appreciate our and your great culture and heritage. Goans only form one percent of India's population. If we desire Goan art and culture to continue and flourish we have to support it. If we do not, no one will! And then we will not have a Goan community. In the Diaspora, a specialeffort needs to be made to bring Goan art to the community. It isdifficult to bring this art (to any individual) one at a time. There is not a big enough concentrated market place for a Goan store and barely for a Goan restaurant. Another responsibility for Goan associations to determine avenues to bring Goa to their members - beyond food and drink. The new motto for G.O.As and Goans should be "Be Proud to be Goan and Show it." He who denies, is ashamed, (or still worse!) is ignorant of his heritage, has no heritage!  "Buy Goan".. "Gift Goan"... "Be Proud to be Goan and Show it."

Important to note that Rajan Narayan & The Goan Observer stood up and out at a time when the alleged Goa Journos were "sleeping" with the politicians.  6. Ethel da Costa - the one woman roadblock to political arrogance & bureaucratic nonsense in Goa.  7. Fred Noronha & Joel D'Souza for keeping Goans all over the world informed of the happenings in Goa.  8. Casa de Goa (Lisboa), Goa Musical Society (UK), Goa Welfare Society (Kuwait), Gavana, Surya, Remo Fernandes, Wendell Rodricks and other Goan cultural groups around the world for keeping alive Goan Art.  9. George Pinto, Darryl Martyris & Goa Sudharop for their unflinching effort towards the betterment of life for the disadvantaged in Goa, and Santosh Helekar & the Goa Prize group for their work against the corrupt.  10. GoaNet, Goa-Goans, GoaLink, Gulf-Goans, GoenchimXapotam and Goans International for bringing us to this point where we are in excellent communication with each other.    Where there was darkness, there now is light  Where there was despair, there now is hope   TODAY is also our 5th Anniversary. We launched this website on August 20, 2000.  We reaffirm our commitment towards REVERSING the Horrible Revision that has been taking place vis a vis Goa & the Portuguese influence on Goa, and the (since 1961) attempt by politicians and their operatives at creating Hindu-Catholic disharmony in Goa. We strongly believe that religion (or a choice of atheism) is a private matter. We are opposed to the exploitation of religion by politicians who rule by division.  We see NO difference between Goans of whatever nationality, sex, religious persuasion (or not), occupation and place of residence.  This year on Goa Day, we commit ourselves to helping the Konkani language to achieve its rightful place in Goa, and for Romi to achieve its goal of recognition. To that end, TSSK and Godfrey Gonsalves, you have our unflinching support.  This year, we also add another commitment: To support Goa Sudharop and Goa SuRaj in any which way we can.

It is a day to celebrate our Goan culture & heritage. We come together on this day to remind ourselves of what really makes us all ‘Proud to be Goans’. Event Program Goan Idol – Is it in you???  We will select 3 Goan Idols, one from each age category (Group 1 – Ages 4 – 7; Group 2 – Ages 8 – 14; Group 3 – Ages 15 and above). We can provide a guitar player (Lauro Braganza) and sound system if needed. WORLD GOA DAY 2006 - PAKISTAN    Goinkars Own Academy Celebrate World Goa Day 2006 21st October 2006  For the 3(superscript: rd) Consecutive year, the Christian Community of Pakistan was entertained by the Goinkars Own Academy as they celebrated World Goa Day 2006 on 21st - 22nd October 2006 at their usual venue the FIRPO FARM.This year a special Mass was held at St. Anthony's Church which was celebrated by Reverend Father Robert D'Silva. After Mass the buses departedat 4.45 p.m. from St. Anthony's Church safely arriving at the Firpo farm. After everyone had settled down, tea and brownies were served, meanwhile, the Executive Committee Members of the Goinkars Own Academy with help from some members set up the place for the entertainment program.An announcement was made to collect their door gifts were made a pack consisting of items such as Masala (spices) Packets, Tea sachets, Tangsachets, Soaps, Flavored Milk, Toothpaste, Pens and the Program whichcarried a lucky number.The evening commenced with Recitation of the Holy Rosary followed by around of Tambola and thereafter dinner. The Emcee for the evening MarieAnna Croning welcomed all to the World Goa Day celebrations, followed by aspeech by the President of the Goinkars Own Academy Deborah Santamaria. In her welcome note the she thanked all for participating in this annual event and informed the crowd that besides the Goinkars Own Academy website set up in 2003, early this year an e-group has also been formed, henceforth all notices, circulars, group discussions etc would be routed through thisforum. Deborah Santamaria informed the audience that recently, she has been nominated as a Member of Alliance of Goan Overseas Association (Alliance of GOA's)Thereafter, the Emcee took over and announced the entertainment segment,which commenced with a short Konkani Comedy skit -ZOMELAM 2000 written anddirected by Deborah Santamaria. It was really amazing to see the talentbrought out in the children of our community. This skit left every one insplits of laughter. The star performers of the Konkani skit were WhitneyBob, Tiffany Fernando, Kacie Fletcher, Amanda Croning, Jonelle Fernandes,Naomi Santamaria, Emerald D'Souza, Perina Pereira, Ethan Fernandes andClifford Fernandes. Next was a Solo song - performed by Nassy Santamaria, and next performers (Whitney Bob, Amanda Croning, Tiffany Fernando, Kacie Fletcher, Fiona Bob &Jonelle Fernandes) rocked the stage with their moves as they danced to thetunes of Temptations.All the way from Goa the land of music and good food a group dance performed by Naomi Santamaria, Chyanne Fletcher, Emerald D'Souza, PerinaPereira and Ethan Fernandes, these kids kept the audience spell bound withthe moves as they danced to the tunes of Gollean Sankli.Yet another Solo song performed by Nassy Santamaria who received tremendous applause for this performance. A group dance "Garam Masala" performed witha difference a touch of Goan and Pakistani moves performed by AmandaCroning, Whitney Bob, Tiffany Fernando and Kacie Fletcher. The nextperformers Chyanne Fletcher, Naomi antamaria, Emerald D'Souza and PerinaPereira danced to the tunes of Shakira's "Hips Dont Lie" Next was yetanother short skit "Mapusa Bazaar" written and directed by DeborahSantamaria cast Clifford Fernandes introducing for the very first time Gavin D'lima, Fabian Bob, Carol Bob, Tony Fernando, Cynthia Fernando,Marianna Croning, Victoria Fernandes & Fiona Bob.  Despite our performersbeing from the Goan, Sri Lankan and South Indian communities, they spokethe Konkani language with perfection. All good things must come to an end, appropriately the last item was theWorld Goa Day theme song "Proud to be a Goan" written by Basilio Magno wassung by Naomi Santamaria.All participants were presented with a gift while the children received agift as well as meal vouchers. Draws for lucky programme was held ad 10lucky winners went home with fabulous prizes. Thereafter the D.J. for the evening Fabian Bob took over and kept the crowd dancing upto 4.30 a.m. with his collection of non stop music.22nd October 2006 Breakfast was ready for all from 7.30 a.m. onwards. After breakfast announcements was made that registration to the Cricket teams was open. Anexciting cricket tournament (comprising of 3 teams) was played, each team even had ladies batting, bowling and fielding.Lunch was served at 1 p.m. Hot cups of Tea and cheese cake was served at 3p.m, thereafter a round of tambola was played which was enjoyed by all asmeal vouchers and cash prizes were given out. The winning team in cricketwon the trophy and each member received a gift from the patron for thistournament Mr. Sabby Fernandes. Gifts were also given to the other cricket teams. The President of Goinkars Own Academy thanked all present for theirparticipation, she emphasized that this was their event and their cooperation and support has made it a success.  TOGETHER WE HAVE MADE ADIFFERENCE!!. GOA ------  August 20 of each year is a day celebrated all over the world by NizGoemkars only to show the depth of their love for their Motherland Goa. Itis not important that our Motherland was ravaged by many an alien rulers which included the Portuguese, before 1961. It is not important that ourMotherland has been ravaged , even more so, after the so called 'liberation'in 1961 by the liberators themselves who even to this day are hell bent on ravaging the person of our Motherland to their own benefits and interests.But it is important that Niz Goemkars do a little introspection on this WORLD GOA DAY and come out of our lethargy and complacency which has been taken as 'weakness' by the marauders to heap more and more insults on our Motherland, may it be its governance; may it be the denial for the rightful claims of its 'tongue' Konkani; may it be the respect for its sons of thesoil, all through its own sons of the soil who have been blinded withself-enrichment and avarice.We, Niz Goemkars wish and want to fight back these injustices unto our Motherland. But our numbers are far so few and spread-out to make a pointedthrust to dislodge the evil forces and bring them to their knees. We gather initial and much desired momentum when we want to show our resentment but unfortunately, we do not move forward to attain our much lauded goals, allto the happiness and contentment of the evil forces, who, all the time go onmultiplying like the common cold bacteria with the right ambient atmosphereof lack of fear of justice, which they them selves command.When Niz Goemkars get together, the goals are the same. We see this manifested in newer groups cropping up, such as 'Save Goa Front' led by Adv. Aires Rodrigues; 'Borda Citizen's Committee' led by Lawry Abranches and Socorro Fernandes; 'Lok Shakti'  led by Dr. Francisco Colaco; and themost recent 'Goemche Niz Mogi' led by James Fernandes and Fr. Antim Gomes.And, for the last 6 years, right from 31st August, 2000, there has been the registered 'Goa Su-Raj Party', a veritable convert from an NGO, with a Constitution, un-paralleled and un-surpassed, through the inclusion of Articles in its body i.e. Art. 34, Art 38, Art 40 and Art 41, which commitments are the need of the hour, if our Motherland is to bere introduced to it former glory of effective governance such as Gaunkaries(Comunidades) for agrarian excellence and the Rule of Law for common good,peace and harmony. The school, which has now changed its name to Sacred Heart, has seen some of Kenya's great leaders pass through its gates. The foundation and collaboration of the community saw the establishment of enduring institution in the 1930s.   "I am a product of the school. It has made me what I am today and I am proud of it," says Mvita MP and ODM presidential aspirant, Mr Najib Balala. "Sometimes I wish I was born a Goan. They have a legacy," he says.   A celebration to mark 75 years of the existence of Goan School (presently Sacred Heart School) in Mombasa was the highlight of a weeklong celebration to mark the origin of the institution.   To bring the Goans living in the Diaspora together, the community worldwide celebrates the Goan Day every August. The Goan community in Mombasa lined up a series of events to coincide with the celebrations. The events included an Inter-School's quiz, Memorial Holy service mass for the deceased, thanksgiving mass and an inter-faiths thanksgiving service. There is also the 75th anniversary reunion.   The highlight of the weeklong celebration was a dramatised play written by award winning playwright and Mombasa Municipal Council nominated civic leader, Mr Kuldip Sondhi. Titled, "A Goa Saga", the play is based on the history of the Goan School. It tells the story of the courage of its founders and adventures of school life with a twist of fun and controversies. Having lived in Kenya for more than 100 years, the million-dollar question is, will the community live for another century or will it become extinct?   The community has produced outstanding hockey players and athletes such as Seraphino Antao, who in the 1962 Commonwealth games in Perth, Australia, grabbed two gold medals in 110 yards and 220 yards. The history of Goans is interesting as it is complex. "The Goans came to Mombasa in the 1630s. The town was at one time under the control of rulers in Goa. They and the Portuguese are entwined in the Kenyan history," says Balala.   Many Goans cannot speak Hindu. Neither can those who have settled in Kenya speak their native tongue, Konkani. Dr Ivan Fernandes, who rose to the rank of a senior Deputy Director of Medical Services, is another inspiration to the community. "In my home the only language spoken is English. This is my first language. My children and I have mastered Kiswahili though," Fernandes says.   The chairman of the Goan community in Mombasa, Mr Angelo Pereira explains that although the Goans were under the Portuguese, they were forced to migrate from India and learn English because that was the only way they could secure employment. Interestingly, the Goans in Mombasa carry Portuguese names, wear Indian faces and speak in English and the language of their adopted home, Kiswahili.   Over the years the Goans in Mombasa have severed the social umbilical cord with their ancestors in India and Portugal. They now consider themselves Africans. In 1930s, there were about 5,000 Goans in Mombasa alone. They worked as architects, teachers doctors and stewards.   The numbers have, however, dwindled to an extent that the community, which had its own school boasting of 1,000 children, are now no more than 200. 75-year-old Sacred Heart School in Ganjoni, Mombasa, has seen some of Kenya's great leaders pass through its gates.   They do not have any special attachment to Fort Jesus Museum, the historical monument erected by Portuguese empire builders in 1593 as a military base. "The number is quite low. Most of those who remain here are old people. Majority have migrated to the United Kingdom, Australia and America," says Fernandes.   Others are living in Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, Zanzibar and Arusha. But the tragedy is that some of the Goans who at one point held British passports are stateless. They do not belong to Goa, India, Portugal, Kenya or Britain.   "It is a shame that people who have contributed so much to development should suffer the indignity of being stateless. It is time they stopped sitting on the fence and spoke out," Balala says. Goan Observer -Goa  THE NETWORKER =======By Constatino H.Xavier  Surely, his name is more known than his face. His e-mails fill up the Inbox of Goans around the world. He is the father of ‘World Goa Day’. He is the worldwide Goan net-worker. He is Rene Barreto, from London.   ORIGINALLY FROM Vasco, Rene Barreto was born in Dar es Salaam, in 1936. After his schooling in Belgaum he went back to East Africa in 1955 where he worked for Standard Bank. He has been living in London since 1976, but he well known for his propagation of the annual worldwide Goan community celebration, World Goa Day. The chosen date for the commemorations, 20th of August, marks the day when Konkani was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution by the Indian Parliament, back in 1992.  How did everything start, I asked Rene Barreto when I met him in London? “Goa Day came about because there was a lack of unity among Goans. It is a way of bringing Goans together. After I wrote to my friends all over the world, some six organizations supported the idea in 2000”, remembers Rene, sitting next to his wife Maria Godinho, originally from Majorda. He now also runs the website www.goaday.com.  Phenomenal Growth  Today, Goan communities from all over the world participate in the event. “We have grown from six to roughly 40 participating organizations” he states proudly. Goans of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Kenya, Tanzania, the Middle East and Australia were initially the most active participants. But since 2001 Goans also from Portugal, Spain, Pakistan, Germany and even Goans in India have joined. In Toronto the local celebrations brought 5000 people together. In Lisbon, in August 2002, an alliance of Goan associations gathered over a thousand people.  Yet, it is also true that it has been precisely Konkani language that has been neglected by most part of the Goan Diaspora. World Goa Day seems to have become only one more reason for Goans to gather and socialize by eating, drinking and dancing, depicting what is an annual celebration for a true Goan. Rene, as the overall coordinator and with the help of US-based NGO Goa Sudharop, tried to tie up the diverse celebrations with a yearly theme, such as “Goan Youth” in 2003 and “Jobs for Goans” in 2004. “I believe that without the Goan youth there is no future for Goans. Goans are loosing their identity and it’s time the youth gets involved” he avers. The phone rings. The meeting with Member of Parliament Keith Vaz, of Goan origin, is confirmed for the next day. As a true networker Rene has got friends all over the world in all kind of positions. A good example of his never-ending activity is perhaps the number of e-mails he sent in July 2004 to Goanet mailing list: in total, more than 60 messages!  Goan Identity  But the communities themselves generally seem to forget Goan identity. In 2004 the Goans of Los Angeles (USA) had a “Portuguese dance performance” in their programme, the Karnataka Goan Association promised a “Karaoke night” and the most widespread initiative with North American Goans seemed to be a “barbecue picnic”. The Goans from New South Wales (Australia) state on their website that “many Goans (in Goa) speak Konkani in addition to English”. Confronted with this gap of ignorance by the Goan Diaspora, Rene Barreto defends that “we cannot put the blame on the community which of course likes socializing and dancing more than everything. But we need to make people aware that there has to be more than that”.  What, I ask.  The answer is partially given by two examples: Basilio Magno , a Goan from Spain who composed the hymn for World Goa Day (Proud to be a Goan), states that “we owe a debt to Mother Goa which we can give back only by learning and speaking Konkani”. And last year the Quebec Goan Association had the original idea of a writing contest for the younger ones with themes such as “Why do I call myself Goan” or “How does it feel to be a Goan living abroad”. There have been many more interesting initiatives, such as discussions on the role of Goa’s Diaspora in developing Goa, fundraising initiatives for health and education “back home”, literary meetings and Goan Food cooking contests.  Truth is, Rene Barreto has contributed immensely to an awakening of Goa’s Diaspora all over the world, serving as the essential element of contact between the various associations, communities, countries and continents. This has lead to a growing consciousness of Goans worldwide that they are intimately linked to their homeland and that they can draw benefits by interacting with other Goan communities.  Gomant Vishwa Sammelan  What about the recent 2nd Gomant Vishwa Sammelan? Rene was an active participant in the previous editions of this Worldwide Goan Convention annually held in Panjim. “There has been no interaction with the Goans living abroad and we are working on the idea that in future the Alliance of World Goan Organisations will have a representative for communication with the NRI Goa Facilitation Centre. And Mathany Saldanha has verbally promised the support of Goa Government to World Goa Day” he adds.  What moves Rene Barreto to spend hours in front of his computer and send dozens of e-mails per day? “I think of giving something back to my society and my community. I can’t stop doing something I love to do.” Thank you, Rene.    GLOBAL NUMBER  500 000  Is the number of Goans living around the world, according to Vishwas Satarkar, Speaker of Goa’s Legislative Assembly. Out of this number the BJP MLA from Priol estimates that half are settled abroad and an equal number in various part of India. He was speaking on the first day of the 2nd Gomant Vishwa Sammelan.   GLOBAL THOUGHT   This new column of mine seeks to bridge present Goa and its large, diverse and resourceful Diaspora spread all over the world. Much has been written on this subject. Many conferences have taken place. Several promises have been made. On one side, there is a wrong image of Goa’s Diaspora being a case of total success. Are there really greener pastures on the other side of the fence? Are the careers of Goans abroad only stories of success, or are there cases of failure, cases of discrimination and unhappiness? On the other hand, the Goan Diaspora sometimes understand Goa as being reduced to a yearly family holiday destination and a backward land from which everyone wants to flee. But aren’t many Goans, especially second-generation migrant Goans, thinking of coming back? Why is there a growing interest in investing in Goa? Are global initiatives capable of assisting developing projects in Goa itself? What projects and ideas flow within the ocean of Global Goan communities? It's that time again! An opportunity for us to celebrate our proud heritage.
The goans from Toronto Canada send their best wishes to goans around the world as we celebrate WORLD Goa Day on August 20th. As we have in the past, we start our celebrations early as we host Viva Goa on July 29th. Viva Goa attracts many goans from around the world. We welcome goans from around the worldÃ¢Â¦.mark your calendars!

Once again we have designated our Viva Goa celebrations as part of our Goa Day celebration. The goans in Toronto strongly believe in Goan unity and solidarity. It is this unity with goans around the world that will give us a strong voice in times of need.

Every year the attendance at Viva Goa continues to grow. We expect the numbers to exceed 6000 goans this year. We use this day to celebrate our culture, heritage and proud traditions through dance and shows, sporting events and fine cuisine.

Celebrating Goa Day is very important as we have an opportunity to reflect on what it is like being a Goan while sharing this experience with family and friends.

The goans from Toronto continue to support Goan unity and solidarity around the world. We salute Rene Barreto who has shown great leadership in helping bring Goans around the world together to celebrate Goa Day. We have reached a very important crossroad in determining where we take our solidarity. The goans from Toronto continue to pledge their commitment and support to the formation of an Ã¢Alliance of World Goa OrganizationsÃ¢. We are ready to start

least annually to deliberate common issues and provide guidelines
for the management of the organizations.

Getting the Goans of Nairobi to celebrate this day is a way
to affirm our identity, for ourselves and also for our children,
especially those who may not have the same depth of feeling for Goa

For these reasons, celebrating this day is a worthwhile

What is "World Goa Day?" Why do we need to celebrate it? asks -

"World Goa Day" (WGD) was born in 1999. It was primarily unveiled to mark a day in the year where Goans, globally, would come together in solidarity with Goa and Goans. That modest vision has today amplified into something bigger.

The Day honors the vibrant history, language, music, cultural heritage and traditions of Goa.

"World Goa Day" is celebrated on (or around) August 20th. After much campaigning and canvassing by numerous Goans, Concannim was added to the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and recognized as one of the official languages of India on August 20th, 1992. Needless to say, our common language strengthens our identity; it is one of the strongest fibers in the tapestry of Goan identity that connects Goans from all parts of the world.

It is not enough to merely honor our language. We should make every effort to strengthen and promote Concannim among ourselves and our children that the Goan culture may be passed on to future generations in and out of Goa.

Goan communities have gathered to commemorate "World Goa Day" in many major cities around the world. This year, for example, thousands of Goans will congregate (or have already flocked together) to spend time with each other, share food, music, games, stories... to have a good time.

The Goan Association of New Jersey (GOANJ) celebrated the occasion on July 23rd under the leadership of Felix Menezes. The gathering raised $1,304.00 toward building the Cavelossim-ASRO Aids Center for runaway kids in Fatorda, a measure sponsored by the local Don Bosco Technical Center.

On that same day, Oscar Furtado, President of G.O.A. (Toronto, Canada) led housands of Goans to join together for the festivities. The day-long program included cultural items, soccer, volleyball, darts, and badminton tournaments.

There was live music to dance to. Scores of food stalls catering to the Goan palate offered numerous delicacies: cheuris-pao, sannas, bebincas, perad and more.

Flavio Gracias and his Goan Association (U.K.) brought together Goans from other organizations in the UK and celebrated "World Goa Day" in London on July 31st. The event was solemnized with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Alex Dias of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The Goan Association of Germany celebrated WGD in Frankfurt on August 6th with a show entitled, "Goencho Avaz" featuring a number of Goa's illustrious tiatrists.

That was the day also, that the Goa Heritage Action Group (in Goa), expressed solidarity with WGD with the release of a book, "Walking In and Around Panaji, Goa."

In Vancouver, Canada, Goans celebrated WGD on August 14th with an annual picnic.

As a matter of great honor, Rui do Carmo Costa was interviewed on
CREA- RJ.ORG.BR/WEBRADIO on August 16th by Bene Rodrigues of Centro Brasileiro
in Brazil.

We have a few more celebrations coming up...

The Goa Su-Raj Party, on August 20th, will release its "Road Map for Goa" – a booklet outlining their hopes for a better Goa. That event will be highlighted with a 1km "Open Event" bicycle race in Panaji, Goa.

In Melbourne, Australia, Oscar Lobo and his MelGoans will celebrate their third World Goa Day on August 20th.

The Quebec Goan Association has planned to celebrate WGD on August 20th with an annual picnic in Montreal, Canada. Among other events, there will be a Youth Essay Competition for Goan youth (ages 9 through 20). The topics: "Why do I call myself Goan?", "What does it mean to be Goan?", "How does it feel to be a Goan living abroad?", and "What do I like about Goa and Goans?".

The Goinkars Own Academy in Karachi, Pakistan, under the supervision of Deborah Santamaria, will celebrate WGD on August 20th.

There is news from India that the Karnataka Goan Association is coming together at the Catholic Club in Bangalore to celebrate WGD on the same day.

In a different continent, Goans in Maputo, Mozambique will celebrate WGD on August 21st. Incidentally there are some 160 families of Goan origin that live in Maputo.

Ralph Figueiredo and the Goans in Los Angeles, California, USA, will meet together also on August 21st for a grand WGD celebrations. The highlight will be a "Goan Idol" competition.

Another Goan group, the Divar Association of Canada, plan on celebrating the Bonderam Festival and WGD in Mississauga, Canada on August 27th. The main feature promises to be the traditional Bonderam Parade to the tune of Viva Bonderam, composed and sung by Andrew DeSa.

Again, on August 27th, Goans in New York, USA, under the leadership of Peter D'Souza, will convene at their annual picnic at Lake Sebago Beach to celebrate WGD with the theme "O' for the Goa State of Mind."

For the sake of practicality, on the same day, another group of American Goans will meet at Manorhaven Beach Park in Long Island, USA to celebrate WGD. The expected program will include an "Indian Idol" competition.

Goans in Lisbon, Portugal are coming together in mid-September for a commemorative luncheon to observe WGD. Their extensive program is presently on the work bench.

And there are several other World Goa Day celebrations around the world not listed above.

Mention needs to be made of two noteworthy figures: Rene Barretto, UK-based expatriate Goan, is the visionary who dared to launch World Goa Day. On the flipside, it should be noted, World Goa Day would not be so widely celebrated were it not for the support of Goans and Goan organizations around the world at the inception of World Goa Day and today. Out of Spain, another Goan, Basilio Magno composed a song, "Proud to be a Goan" to memorialize WGD.

The above catalog of World Goa Day celebrations make it palpably clear that we Goans are proud of ourselves and our heritage. We demonstrate this in our robust spirit of camaraderie, our yearning to maintain our culture (food, drink, and music) and aspiration to pass on ethos to our children. And we do a great job too! But limiting ourselves to brummagem amity is not genuine enough. External celebrations are wonderful expressions of zealous goodwill.

However, we need to go a step further - translate our pride into something tangible. We should use these opportunities, such as World Goa Day, as stepping stones to fire up consciousness about Goa. We need to raise issues and embark upon enterprises relevant to Goa and especially to Goans in Goa.

With privilege comes responsibility. Goans of the Diaspora - who supposedly left Goa for a better life – need to develop an awareness of accountability.

We can and should do more for our fellow Goans in Goa in terms of social and educational outreach in a more cohesive manner.

Many Goan groups outside Goa have stepped up to the plate. Associations in the U.K., the U.S., Australia, the Middle East and elsewhere have established foundations, charities, raised money for worthy causes, established a support system for the disadvantaged and the deprived, and completed substantial efforts for villages, individuals, institutions and organizations in Goa.

There is no dearth of opportunities. While we revel in celebrating our cultural heritage,
we have to keep an eye to relieving the burden of our less fortunate brethren in Goa.
Let us contribute concretely to express our solidarity with Goans in Goa. That way,
we can associate with our heritage, people, language and culture with genuine gratification,
not vacuous pride. That will truly enhance the celebrations of World Goa Day and make
them momentous.

WORLD GOA DAY HAS COME TO STAY by Basilio Magno (Spain)

The World Goa Day celebrations going in its sixth year on 20 August 2005 is a social triumph for the Goan cummunities the world over. It is a phenomenal event born out of nothing, just few e-mail epistles by its founder, UK based Rene Barreto, blasted on all Goan nets the unmistakable message of the virtues of Goan unity and the love of Mother Goa. This had mesmerized all the presidents of the Goan Associations to fall in line with his call in the year 2000, and year by year their number has grown abundantly. Last week the Goan Association Gemany joined in for the first time and celebrated the Day with a Konkani Music Show by artistes from Goa. Rene's noble idea would have died a natural death had it not been for the internet collaboration of Goanet.org, Goa-Goans, Goa-world, etc, which helped to propagate the idea to Goans in every corner of the world. His leadership instinct told him that he would need a theme-song or an anthem for the event. Having had known that I had composed a song for Princess Diana and the King of Spain, Rene thought of me and e-mailed to me a request to compose "a piece similar to the one you composed for Lady Diana." . As there was nothing else to go by in the maiden year, my song "Proud to be a Goan" took the centre stage. It had become a hit having been hosted on Goa-world.com website, sung by me accompanied by a Spanish band. Thanks to Mario Fernandes of Goan International, who combined the celebration of Goa Day with the Bonderam festival at Sao Mathias island, Divar, premiering "Proud to be a Goa", all Goa newspapers carried the story and printed the lyrics of the song. The o HERALD o daily had splashed on its front page the story by Francis X. Ribeiro on 20 August 2000: GOANS TO OBSERVE 'GOA DAY' AROUND THE WORLD TODAY. THEME SONG PROUD TO BE A GOAN TO BE PREMIERED AT BONDERAM. and followed up: Goans all around the globe will be observing August 20 as Goa Day, an idea conceived by Rene Barreto of Goan Interna- tional who is based in London, with the objective of bringing together Goans form different parts of the world. To mark the Goa Day, celebrations will be held from Kenya to Maryland (USA), London to Bahamas and Harare to Goa at the Sao Mathias island, Divar. To make this a memorable day, a special song (end of this story) has been composed by famed Goan songwriter Basilio Magno, residing in Spain. Basilio who is still recovering from his long illness, was determined to produce something worthwhile. Within a week after being requested by Rene, this former "Irving Berlin of India" came out with the theme song for Goa Day, titled "Proud to be a Goan", a theme he always wanted to propagate to the younger generation, who very often are shy to say, 'I am a Goan'. Within these six years Goa Day has rightly changed to World Goa Day, and has come a long way in popularity. We may say World Goa Day has come to stay, it being fixed in the Goan psyche, and there is no fear of losing the date. However in his farsightedness Rene has established this year Alliance of World Organisations and has entrusted it to a successful organiser in Canada -Oscar Furtado. Rene has always been a lover of Goa. Some years ago he had oganised Goan Jamboree, taking a large number of Goans from London for a picnic in Goa. Not long ago he founded the Goan Musical Society in London, of which he is the founder/president. Musically it is carried on by Joao Paulo Cota, which is doing great job in projecting Goa's musical image in Britain. The name of Rene will go down in the annals of Goan social history as the man who singlehandedly unified the Goan communities the world over and has inspired them to work for the upliftment of Goa and the Konkani language. Others may now also claim to have dreamed of the idea but Rene with hard work and organizing ability has made it the Goan reality. And that is the fact we cherish. My message for the World Goa Day 2005 is that we Goans should shed our colonial complex be it Portuguese of British and proudly start speaking in Konkani with each other at home and at Goan functions. Let's not forget that a community without a language of its own becomes a pariah community. The Goans have a very rich language and the only Indian language written in Roman script. It is our special heritage. A move is afoot spearheaded by the Dalgado Konkani Acade- my presided by the former MLA Tomazinho Cardoso to seek recognition for the Roman script for Konkani along with the Devnagiri script. Let's collaborate in the letter campaign and make it the theme of WGD 2005, making everyone conscious of the need of Roman script not only for Konkani but for all Indian languages to face the challenges of the cyber age we live in. The date marks the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution by both houses of Parliament in 1992. While talk of the event in Goa seems muted, a virtual fever is building up in cyberspace among the Goan communities now thriving in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Spain, Kenya, Tanzania and some countries of the Middle East. Writing in the official website of World Goa Day, Mr Rene Barreto, convenor of the event, says, "on Goa day this year, thousands of Goans will once again remind themselves of the need to work to preserve our culture, music, history, language, cuisine, and art for our children, the non-Goan community, and for posterity." "The theme of "Giving back to Goa" is a good way to inspire our Goan community to do more for Goa and Goans worldwide," writes the London-based Mr Barreto. "Let Goa day be a beacon of light and inspiration throughout the year and for the rest of our lives. Let us make this our motto: "Proud to be a Goan," and live up to that motto." Messages of support and solidarity have been crowding Mr Barreto's email inbox.  An email by Mr Keith Vaz, British Member of Parliament states: "As someone of Goan descent I send my very best wishes for a most successful World Goa Day. This is obviously a crucial step forward in recognising the unique contribution of the Goan community to the life not just of India but also other countries where they have chosen to make their homes. Goa is known the world over for its civility, hospitality and diversity. It is one of the most glorious places on earth. I send my very best wishes for a successful day." Hoping to enthuse more among the Goan diaspora, Mr Barreto has posted some of these messages onto the popular mailing list goanet@goanet.org. Mr Oscar Furtado, of G.O.A, Toronto, sees this as an opportunity to celebrate the values the Goan community possesses and also to share these values with the various communities around the world. "As this year's theme for World Goa day is 'Giving something back' to society, I am proud to say that the association and individual members continue to donate funds to projects in Goa and help other less fortunate Goans."  Mr Oscar C Lobo, from Melbourne, Australia urges Goans everywhere to shun the caste system and Mr John Paul Kihara of the Goan Community of Mombasa, Kenya, warmly invites all Goans and non-Goans to their special Goan festival in September. There is even a congratulatory message from a Briton, Mr Paul Hancock. There are some dissonant notes too. Writing in Roman script Konkani, one Mr Simon Mendonca laments that though Goans proudly proclaim their Goan-ness, they are ashamed to talk in Konkani.  The bouquets and brickbats apart, Mr Rene Barreto affirms that on August 20, "Goans world-wide join in solidarity to celebrate our Goan-ness." In Goa, World Goa Day is planned for August 24. Among other things, the celebrations will include a stage production by Professor Isabel Santa Rita Vas. Elsewhere in the world, Goan organisations have planned activities for the entire months of August, September or October 2003. Details are listed on www.goaday.com.  There are games, picnics, dinners and dances, cultural shows and cooking demos, even Masses and healing services planned by Goan communities in places like Toronto, Montreal, Calgary (Canada), New Jersey, California, Houston (USA), London (UK) and Nairobi and Mombasa in Kenya. The list of celebrations is big, the activities diverse and the places, far-flung. The common denominator is Goa. Music naturally becomes part of the celebrations. Mr Basilio Magno, a Goan from Spain, had composed a special song, "Proud to be a Goan," for the first World Goa Day in 2000. I wish to convey my CONGRATULATIONS and hope this will continue for many years to come. This year the annual occasion, a picnic was organized by the young members of the Quebec Goan Association. A good number of members and friends were present despite the unpredictable weather. Thanks to Sareta Warren we were able to secure our favourite spot at the park. The spread of food was quite traditional. The young organizers Ivan, Olivia and Cheryl had a chance to do their part in bringing our small but enthusiastic community together and they did a good job of it. This is the first time in the Quebec Goan Association's history that we have five young members serving on the board of directors: Ivan Paes, Priscilla Fernandes, Melissa Fernandes, Cheryl Correa and Olivia de Mello together with Leticia Rodrigues as the cultural director, Lourdes D'Souza and me Rose de Souza president for the past two years (2006-2007, 2007-2008). This is the first year we introduced an old family tradition to our community, the Ladainha (litany) sung in Latin with the distribution of grams & coconut bit, vino branco and cookies sponsored by Phyl and Neru Rodrigues and family. The evening was a very enjoyable one with dinner served by a team of volunteers followed by social dancing to the rhythm of the Stardust Trio. The community thoroughly enjoyed the evening.   Our next event was the celebration of St. Francis Xavier's feast on the 1st of December 2007. Four families sponsoring this occasion which means that more of our community members are working together to help the young committee and encourage them to serve the Quebec Goan Association and pursue our goal of preserving our culture. This year the Christian Community of Pakistan was entertained by the Goinkars Own Academy as they got together to celebrated World Goa Day 2007 on 8th – 9th November 2007 at a different venue this year the BARADARI FARM.

Since, it was a working day the committee members decided to depart at 7 p.m. giving enough time to get back home and pack their bags for their overnight stay at the farmhouse. On arrival at the pickup point everyone was handed over a goody bag consisting of toothbrush, Lipton tea mug, tea sachets, ticky pack biscuits, soap and a juice pack before boarding the bus. The luxury bus departed at 7.45 p.m. from St. Anthony's Church safely arriving at the Baradari Farm House at 8.45 p.m. The Executive Committee Members of the Goinkars Own Academy with help from some members set up the place for the evening. Thereafter announcement was for dinner.

After dinner, the Emcee announced the entertainment segment for the evening, a game of TOMBOLA was played, the winners Tony Santamaria received for a side game “Haircut at Fletchers” and the full house dinner for 2 at Beach Luxury Hotel was given to Gerry Croning.

Although a variety of items were planned, but owing to the tense security conditions in the country the committee decided to drop the variety program, but a few children were adamant and they wanted to do their bit, the items presented by these children were prepared by them selves. The children performed three items, the first item was a dance “WISHES”, the second was a song “GOTTA GO MY OWN WAY” and the third “ HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL“ performed by Naomi Santamaria, Nikita Fernandes & Chayanne Fletcher. Thereafter “GOINKARS NEWS & VIEWS”. Followed by a sing song by Kevin Fernandes (BOBBY) on the guitar.

Finally the World Goa Day theme song "Proud to be a Goan" written by Basilio Magno was sung and all joined in. concluding the night event, D.J. Fabian Bob took over and kept the crowd dancing till the early hours of the morning with his collection of non stop Konkani & English music.

A delicious Breakfast of Halwa Puri was ready for all at 8.30 a.m. After breakfast announcements were made for registration to the Cricket teams. Some headed off to the pools, while others relaxed on the swings and under the trees, amid a good collection of Konkani/English/Indian music.

An exciting cricket tournament comprising of 4 teams namely Lady Luck, Lady Bug, Lady Diana and Lady Fish. The commentator Fabian Bob with his witty jokes left the crowd in splits of laughter. The teams not only had the fairer sex batting, bowling and fielding but also did a wonderful job as captains for their teams. The winning team in cricket received a gift from the President of the Goinkars Own Academy. Gifts were also given to the other cricket teams as well as the Referee. Carol Bob and MaryAnn Pereira were presented dinner for 2 vouchers as it was their birthday.

Lunch was served at 1.30 p.m., after some were busy with the game of cards. Hot cups of Tea was served at 4 p.m, thereafter a round of tambola was played which was enjoyed by all. The President of Goinkars Own Academy thanked all present for their participation, she emphasized that this was their event and their cooperation and support has made it a success. Before boarding the bus all were invited for a group photograph. At 5 p.m. all started boarding the bus for home, taking back with them memories of an enjoyable and memorable WORLD GOA DAY

WORLD GOA DAY  Suffused in a mix of love and nostalgia, Goans across the globe are gearing up to celebrate World Goa Day on August 21. The date marks the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution by both houses of Parliament in 1992. While talk of the event in Goa seems muted, a virtual fever is building up in cyberspace among the Goan communities now thriving in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Spain, Kenya, Tanzania and some countries of the Middle East. Writing in the official website of World Goa Day, Mr Rene Barreto, convenor of the event, says, "on Goa day this year, thousands of Goans will once again remind themselves of the need to work to preserve our culture, music, history, language, cuisine, and art for our children, the non-Goan community, and for posterity." "The theme of "Giving back to Goa" is a good way to inspire our Goan community to do more for Goa and Goans worldwide," writes the London-based Mr Barreto. "Let Goa day be a beacon of light and inspiration throughout the year and for the rest of our lives. Let us make this our motto: "Proud to be a Goan," and live up to that motto." Messages of support and solidarity have been crowding Mr Barreto's email inbox.  An email by Mr Keith Vaz, British Member of Parliament states: "As someone of Goan descent I send my very best wishes for a most successful World Goa Day. In Portugal we know the Built Heritage (monuments, buildings), Landscape Heritage (the natural landscape of the Sintra Ridge of Mountains and others) and the Historical Centres of some cities, classified as being of municipal or national interest and even as World Heritage Sites under the aegis of UNESCO.  Our own little Goa also has its conglomeration of convents and churches of Old Goa classified as World Heritage Monuments by UNESCO and placed by the Government under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India.  However, the concept includes also a people's typical culture and language which it is up to the population to cherish and protect, under the risk of these traits of its identity getting diluted and even disappearing with the passage of time.  This is particularly important in what concerns our Goan, Damanese, Diuese, Dadraite and Nagar-Haveliite cultures and languages, more and more seriously threatened (mainly in respect of Goa) by the unrestricted and unregulated influx of people from the neighbouring states (and not only from these) - persons whom the resident Goans call bhaile (= from outside) - and also by the day-to-day bigger emigration of genuine Goans whose second and third generations go on losing contact with their origins.  These thoughts come à propos the coming celebrations of "Goa Day". Thanks to an opportune initiative of UK-based Rene Barreto in 1999, the yearly celebrations of a Goa Day became a reality as from the year 2000 wherever there are Goans and descendants of Goans, be it in cities, towns and villages of Goa be it in the diaspora.  And I suppose that everybody will remember why August 20 was chosen as the ideal date for these celebrations:  to honour the day when our language - one of the main ingredients of our identity as people - "came of age" (if I may say so) upon being included in the 8th schedule of the constitution of India and being in this way recognised as one of that country's national languages.  I take pride - if you allow me - in being the one who proposed that date which, being seconded by the US-based Patrick de Sousa, was accepted by all the members of the various Goan internet d-lists and fora.  If memory does not fail me, the shape of the first celebrations in 2000 were left to the criterion of each group of celebrants. Those of 2001 had Solidarity as theme; and, as August 19 was a Sunday, it was to this day that the celebrations were anticipated, and it was then that for the first time the GOA DAY was celebrated in Lisbon, with the presence of over a hundred persons at the "Casa de Goa" restaurant terrace.  Let us this year dedicate our celebrations in a special way to the Defense of our Cultural Heritage. The Porvorim-based Goa Heritage Action Group is going to mark the occasion with a theatrical piece in English and with Konkani poetry reading at a (not yet officially recognised) historical site - the 16th century "Betim Cross" which is in a dilapidated state and the Group is bent in recuperating for posterity.  Let us all honour in whatever way we can our avoi-bhas (our mother tongue) Konkani. It is true that many of us in the diaspora, especially those of the second and later generations - born far from the small state of Goa and many of them with difficulty to maintain contact with their roots, as said above -, do not know to write and sometimes even to speak in that language and, of those who do write, most do it in the Roman script, while this script is unfortunately being banished in Goa, affecting adversely - for example - the tiatrs which have traditionally been written in "Romi Konknni" by Christian tiatrists.  But, irrespective of whether we know or not the language of our land, it is unquestionable that amchi bhas (our language) constitutes the basis of our "Goanness" and, even if only for this reason, we are duty bound to promote its preservation and development.   And why do I say that Goa Day - 2002 should give special relevance to our language (without forgetting those of the other territories which made up the former Portuguese Estado da India)?  At least for three very strong reasons:  * this is the year of the 15th anniversary of the "Official Language Act" by which Konkani was made the official language of Goa by the respective Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) on February 4;  * the 15th anniversary (also) of Goa Statehood on May 30 - a status which was not attainable if the territory did not first have its own official language;  *and the 10th anniversary, on August 20, of the unanimous approval, by the two houses of the Indian Parliament, of the law which included our language in the 8th schedule of the Constitution.   In Portugal, from where I am writing, there is a further motive: it was in May 1987 that an association of Goans, Damanese, Diuese, Dadraites and Nagar-Haveliites was informally constituted with the name of "Casa de Goa", later on legalised by notarial deed on July 15 of the same year.  This is therefore the year of its 15th anniversary. The Goa Day - 2002 is therefore going to be celebrated in Portugal, with events on August 16, 17 and 20, as Goa, Daman and Diu Day (Note: As in the context of the erstwhile Portuguese Estado da India Dadra and Nagar Haveli were part of the District of Daman, for us residents of Portugal the term "Daman" includes those two enclaves which were annexed by India and transformed into a "Union Territory" on August 11, 1961 - months before the takeover of Goa, Daman and Diu).  May I be permitted to recall here what I wrote in the special edition of Casa de Goa's Newsletter in November 2001: "...It is to be noted that the culture of Goa is not the same as that of Daman or Diu nor the same as that of Dadra and Nagar Haveli...  We have to bear in mind that, if the roots of us all are Indian (on which the Portuguese cultural values were implanted with bigger or lesser perfection, thus creating cultures that are perchance different from those of the rest of India), the identity of the Goans comes mainly from their Konkani ancestry, that of the Damanese and Diuese from their Gujarati substratum and that of the Dadraites and Nagar-Haveliites from their Marathi basis".   In what concerns the language, many Goans, especially the Christians and in a particular manner those in the diaspora, resent the fact that, when Konkani gained the status of a national language in India, it was approved that only Devnagri would be accepted as its true and legal script.  A year ago I upheld that, our mother tongue being the only one that is written in six or more scripts (which is one of its richest traits), we should struggle for the official recognition of this richness. I remember having then been strongly contested from various quarters.  I am therefore happy with the recent news that the Government of Karnataka had decreed that in that state the official script for Konkani would be Kannada and none else.  Why then can we not have the Roman Konkani legalised in Goa?  Let us face the facts squarely and honestly: in Karnataka (Mangalore, Karwar, etc.) Konkani is written in Kannada, in Tulu in some other area of the same state (bordering the Kerala state), in Malayali in Kochi, in Gujarati and Urdu in Gujarat; then why not in Devnagri and Roman in Goa?   Let us be proud of being not only Goans but also Konkanis; and let us honour our bhas, whatever be the script in which we write it. And let us endeavour to learn (those who do not know) or to improve the knowledge of (those who do) the Konkani language. Vaman Ragunath Shennoy Varde Valaulikar, better known by his pen name Shennoy Goembab, who devoted the last twenty years of his life to research the language, literature and history of the Konkanis, was able to prove that Konkani is not a dialect of Marathi but an independent language and, indeed, born much before Marathi (I beg my Dadraite and Nagar-Haveliite readers - as well as other defenders of Marathi - to forgive this my public assertion).  Let therefore each one of us cherish his/her language as one of the most prized treasures of the people to whom he/she belongs. And let us bear in mind that this is also the year of the 125th birth anniversary of Shennoy Goembab, it being therefore celebrated in Goa as "Goan asmitai year" or year of Goan identity.   Let us all hold hands to celebrate our languages and our cultures and in this way contribute towards the preservation and defense of our cultural heritage.  Jorge de Abreu Noronha Oeiras - Lisboa, August 10, 2002

Dear Mr. Rene Barretto, It has come to our knowledge that you are in the vanguard of the movement to keep Goa's flag flying high. We know that you have really stretched yourself in an endeavour to preserve Goa's fast fading culture and ethos. We are therefore pleased to inform you of the birth of a new organisation called Goenkarachem Daiz, based in Margao, with the following objectives:  

1. For caring, nurturing, preserving, propagating and > safeguarding our common Goan ethos, namely Konknni > language, literature, culture, history, art, music, > folklore and other related subjects.

2. To set up a modern "SONDORBH GRONTHALAYA" (reference library), to house a treasure of over 2000 books belonging to Antonio da Piedade Morais, sponsor of the Konknni Obheas Kendr (Konknni Research Centre), Goa, Altinho, Fatorda, Salcete, Goa covering Konknni language, literature, culture, history and other subjects including books in the possession of otherindividuals.  

3. To update the reference library with the latest publications and other material that will cater to the individual needs of students, researchers and scholars.  

4. To provide research, guidance and library facilities to Ph.D. students and other scholars. 

5.To work for Konknni culture through a scientific study and promotion of the Konknni language, literature, folklore, theatre, study of the Konknnipeople, their dialects and other social linguistic work, including work in the fields of education and research in Konknni.  6

. To provide scholarships to deserving students as well as publish research material and other literature pertaining to the Konknni language, literature, culture, history, art, music, folklore and other related subjects.  

7. To organise seminars, meetings, conferences, gatherings, symposia, exhibitions etc. that will aid in the fulfilment of the above aims.  

8. To co-operate with other institutions having similar objects.  

9. To raise funds to meet the expenditure incurred in the pursuance of the above aims and objects. 

10.To do such other things as are in consonance with the main objects. 1

1. To work towards the preservation of Goan heritage, its flora and fauna. 

12. To preserve, sustain and promote Goan customs, habits, characteristics, traditions and moral values.  

13. The objectives which are not mentioned but related to the Society's objects shall be taken into consideration by the Society and decided upon from time to time.

World Goa Day Celebration in Goa Dated 2005-08-28   The Goan may go out of Goa but the Goa will not go out of the Goan. World Goa Day founded by UK based Goan NRI Rene Barreto is an endeavour to bring together in solidarity Goans settled worldwide is a celebration of all things Goan; art and culture, customs and traditions, music, literature, cuisine and the Goan himself. World Goa Day Function - 20th August 2005 August 20th. 2005 marked the revival of the Goan association (GOANZ) with the celebration of the World Goa Day at the St. Therese hall. The response was overwhelming with over 250 Goans sharing the evening tea. This gave the boost to form a new committee, with the sole aim to promote and retain the culture of Goa and Goans.

Goans to observe ‘Goa Day’ around the world today

CALANGUTE, AUG 19 — Goans all around the globe will be observing August 20 as Goa Day, an idea conceived by Rene Barreto of Goan International who is based in London, with the objective of bringing together Goans from different parts of the world. To mark the Goa Day, celebrations will be held from Kenya to Maryland (USA), London to Bahamas and Harare to Goa at the Sao Mathias island, Divar. To make this a memorable day, a special song (end of this story) has been composed by famed Goan songwriter Basilio Magno, residing in Spain. Basilio, who is still recovering from his long illness, was determined to produce something worthwhile. Within a week after being requested by Rene, this former "Irving Berlin of India," came out with the theme song for Goa Day, titled "Proud to be a Goan," a theme he always wanted to propagate to the younger generation, who very often are shy to say, `I am a Goan’.

Mario Fernandes speaking to the Herald, disclosed that through the Goa Day it is hoped that Goans globally will remember their past, the present and plan their future to maintain its traditional and unique culture. "We need to bring out the positiveness in us, shun the negatives and march forward in the new millennium," he said. It is a privilege that the musically-rich Sao Mathias community will be able to perform the composition of Basilio Magno, during the St Mathias’ Bonderam festival on August 20. Since the Bonderam festival is a centuries old traditional culture of the Goans which was celebrated on August 20, it was decided to to celebrate Goa Day on this day. To also mark this world Goa Day, a special presentation will be made to Victor Athaide for his immense contribution as a player and dedicated lover of football and cricket.

Victor retired playing at the age of 53 years. He has encouraged and has been a role model for the youth of Divar. This special presentation will be made by Goa’s greatest player Vasco’s Andrew D’Souza, of Vasco Sports Club. After the Bonderam festival, the celebrations will continue into the late hours of the night, with a dance being organised at the island. Basilio was born in Goa and educated in Bombay, where he studied at the private Horniman College of Journalism. He freelanced while he was in Bombay and Portugal, and in Germany among other things he edited a monthly newspaper "The Hessen Observer" for a company of the US army in Germany, working in its public affairs office. But be it in Bombay, Goa, Germany or Spain, he is better known for his
multilingual compositions.

He began composing songs in English way back in 1949, when hardly any Indian had indulged in the art of English songwriting. Besides, he published his songs under his East-West Music Co, and had them copyrighted in England. In 1951 he published his classic "The Song of Goa" now retitled "Rome of the East." In 1953 he did "Santa Maria" dedicated to Cardinal Gracias. In 1956 he composed his first `royal’ song for Princess Maragret of England, which brought him to the attention of the Bombay music critics. For this and some other songs of his, they dubbed him as the "lrving Berlin of India" Basilio has to his credit a 40 minutes operetta: "A Day In Goa" published with words and music. He is the premier writer of Goan folksongs in English, way back in the fifties, and in 1978 has published a booklet with 10 songs. Both the works were reviewed in the Goa Today magazine in the seventies. An ardent admirer of the late Princess Diana, he has done two songs for her, one of which he was invited to sing on the German TV RTL-Plus when the Royal couple visited Germany in 1987. In 1991 he composed "Viva el Rey" in praise of Spanish democracy. In 1997 he produced an audio cassette of his songs sung by an English singer Marcie Summers.

Basilio began songwriting out of necessity. In 1949 he had written an English play for which he needed few songs in English to sing between the scenes as is the Goan style. Instead of using old songs he decided to compose his own songs with the help of a flute. He did the opening song, and a few more. The applause that he received for these, inspired him to dedicate himself to the art, making a study of it through many books on songwriting and publishing. His ability to write love verses from quite a young age helped him on his way to songwriting. When the Portuguese Governor General of Goa — Vassalo e Silva spotted his talent, he offered him a scholarship to visit Portugal to try his luck with his song "The Rock of Portugal". But his English song failed to attract the Portuguese publishers of those times. After four years stay in Portugal he migrated to Germany and after retiring there in 1989 settled down in Spain, the country belonging to his wife Rosa Maria Lopez Gonzalez. Here one can hear his voice, rendering his song "Viva el Rey" on Radio M-80 Madrid and on its 36 channels since October 1997, the song having been adopted as the signature tune for national newscast on its programme Goma-Espuma, to the envy of many Spanish composers who had vied for the honour.

Goan musicians in London, Nairobi and elsewhere are preparing themselves to play the theme song. Mario Fernandes representing Goans International here in Goa on Goa Day, has received the lyrics of the theme song ‘Proud to be a Goan’ and it will be performed at the Bonderam festival on August 20, by the musical rich Sao Mathias (Malar) community.

of the need to work to preserve our culture, music, history, language, cuisine, and art for our children, the non-Goan community, and for posterity.

It is a day when Goans, Goan institutions and social organizations all over the World plan activities that relate to their Goan Cultural Heritage these celebrations are held to reinvigorate in us, our families and our friends - our Cultural Heritage, echoing what many Goans say "I was born a Goan and will die a Goan". A true Goan in life as well as in death !

Let's not forget that a community without a language of its own becomes a pariah community. The Goans have a very rich language and the only Indian language written in Roman script. It is our special heritage.

The World Goa Day is a social triumph for the Goan cummunities the world over. It is a phenomenal event born out of nothing, just few e-mail blasted on all Goan nets the unmistakable message of the virtues of Goan unity and the love of Mother Goa.

It has helped the Goan Associations to fall in line with a call made in the year 2000, and year by year their number has grown abundantly. Every year, festivities are held in all five different continents by over forty Goan organizations, including India.

The idea would have died a natural death had it not been for the internet collaboration of Goan Associations , many Goan Forums, Goannews networks, and Goan Indvidual - which helped to propagate the idea to Goans in every corner of the world.

Though we may be far away from home for whatever reasons, lets not forget, where we come from and try our very best to carry Goa with us, wherever we go and spread the Goan essence far and wide so that people will know and admire our great Goan culture and our heritage.

Over the years, we have learned much from non-Goans and improved ourselves in the process. We have a lot to offer the world and should not be ashamed of or shy away from our own glorious culture. We are as gifted as any other people, and we should be willing to demonstrate that pride in our actions.

Dreams and ambitions take hold more quickly when shared with others. We have done so through the various GOAN organizations and e-groups we have established in the past few years and the cooperation of Goans wherever they are.

Goan Basilio Magno from Spain wrote the theme song, "Proud to be a Goan," especially at my request for the very First World Goa Day on August 20, 2000. His composition has become synonymous with World Goa Day celebrations. The lyrics and music perfectly express love for and solidarity with our motherland, Our beloved Goa.

Generous giving and receiving are the basic aspects of positive social relationships and healthy Communities. There are no limits to what we can achieve together ! The theme of "Giving back to Goa" is a good way to inspire our Goan community to do more for Goa and Goans worldwide.

Let WORLD GOA DAY be a beacon of light and an inspiration throughout the year and for the rest of our lives. Let us make our motto: "Proud To Be a Goan," live up to it and help make it a reality.

We should celebrate WORLD GOA DAY in our hearts, in our minds, in our homes and in our Communities. Let us dwell on the Positives and let no negatives set foot in our lives.

I applaud you for your efforts towards organizing GOA DAY 2003. I would like to
repeat some of what I said last year on the occasion of GOA DAY.

GOA SUDHAROP (www.goasudharop.org) is committed to sharing the pride and joy
Goans feel as a community on GOA DAY this year. Our manner of celebration is to try and give
something back to our community by improving and developing Goa. Our efforts are very minor but
we are trying.

Other Goans have given back differently and impressively. Whether they have
built cyber communities, donated money, time, skills, computers, or work for the
underpriviledged, etc., there is hopefully a significant increase in altruism, based on our traditional Goan
emphathy for humanity I suppose.

Our worldwide celebration of GOA DAY should not be minimized. It compares no
less with the Irish efforts of ST. PATRICK'S DAY and America's INDEPENDENCE DAY (minus the
commercial marketing of those days) in preserving our identity. If we want to be, we can be a proud
people, holding our
own on the world stage. We have our own music, art, cuisine, history,
literature, etc. Let's
hope we speficially set aside some time this GOA DAY to celebrate our culture.

Congratulations to you and everyone who has contributed to making this GOA DAY
happen again.

This year World Goa Day (www.goaday.com) is being celebrated Aug 21, 22 or at
times convenient to
Goan organizations based on their calendars.

This year's main theme is "JOBS FOR GOANS" - not just in Goa but around the
world. One of the most
significant issues facing the world-wide Goan community is jobs and our economic
future. There are
other important issues too. However, we should focus on this theme during the
WORLD GOA DAY
celebrations. In the past, Rene and I have been pleased with the events, but
sometimes they did
not have a serious, meaningful element.

This year's celebrations on Aug 21, 22, can be left to each individual
organization. However, the
celebrations should include the theme: Jobs for Goans. We would recommend that
whatever the
celebration, there should be time set aside called JOBS AND CAREERS.
1. Invite speakers from various business organizations.
2. Invite employers to discuss their companies, especially Goan employers.
3. Invite Goans seeking jobs to come to the event and network.
4. Provide career advice.

The future success of Goans is based on our economic well-being. We have many
Goan unemployed in
Goa. In addition, Goans around the world do not know necessarily know the
various opportunities
available to them and do not necessarily seek the top jobs or the highest
positions. They need
encouragement, support and information. They need to see and hear other
successful Goans.

In addition to the "JOBS FOR GOANS" theme, if you have time consider adding the
following to the
agenda:

1. FINANCIAL LITERACY. Invite money management speakers. The can talk about
investing,
retirement planning, insurance, children savings accounts, elder care
management, etc. There is a
critical financial literacy gap in the Goan community which needs to be
addressed.

2. POLITICAL INVOLMENT. Invite political activists, even if you disagree with
their views. Have
them discuss the political process locally and how one can be involved.
Ultimately, without being
involved in the political process, we will continue to be marginalized and
sidelined while others
dictate our future and make the rules we live under. No point in complaining if
we do not become
active politically. Through political power, most of our other goals can be
achieved.

3. HEALTH FAIR. Invite doctors/nurses and have them speak about prevention and
cures of common
diseases and ailments. Diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure, cancers,
children heath issues,
senior citizen issues, etc. There are a number of topics which can be covered.

Let us move forward together in a meaningful, memorable manner.

Viva Damão! Keep the culture alive: First “WORLD DAMAN DAY” Celebrated Worldwide on 20th August 2008

The first-ever, “WORLD DAMAN DAY” was celebrated by people of Daman origin living outside India in countries like the UAE, USA, Canada, Holland, Macau, Portugal and the UK along with the 9th “World Goa Day” on invitation from its London-based founder, Rene Barreto. The month-long celebrations were undoubtedly, the biggest worldwide Damanense party in the history of Daman!

World Daman Day like World Goa Day, is primarily celebrated outside of India in an effort to first establish identity and later turn it into a brand as Goa has already done. The date, though significant for Goa vis-à-vis the status of the Konkani language, isn’t of any significance to Daman. But there was the benefit of getting a helping hand from the much-experienced organizers of WGD. In any case, ultimately, it was the spirit that counted and which turned a black number on the calendar into a red-letter day!

The theme for World Daman Day ’08 was, “Viva Damão! Keep the culture alive!” The imposing centuries-old monuments, customs and traditions have withstood the test of time – all 450 years of them – but it is the culture that breathes life into them.

The motto was to promote, publicize and celebrate all things Damanense by showcasing the unique Damanense cultural heritage, expressed culturally and artistically.

Cock in the shadow of the peacock

A heady blend of Indian and Portuguese cultures, the Indo-Portuguese subculture of Daman is obviously multicultural, multilingual and multiracial yet always in beautiful melodic harmony. When the Portuguese spelling of the word, ‘Daman’ is broken up into its two syllables, it reveals the secret behind the characteristic hospitality of the typical Damanense – 'Da mão' – which literally translates as, 'give me your hand,' meaning, ‘welcome!’ Says Asunta Franco, Country Coordinator for Fujairah, “You can take a Damanense out of Daman but you can never take Damão out of a Damanense.” It truly is a way of life, for life!

UK – Leicester & Peterborough

The largest body of Damanenses outside India is based in the UK comprising largely Catholics, Hindus and Muslims who have literally transplanted the culture on to British soil. Says Franco Fonseca, Peterborough-based Country Coordinator for the UK, “the British come to observe our social and cultural events but not with the intention of adapting to the culture… they have adoption in mind.” The month-long festival held in Leicester and Peterborough showcased Damanense cuisine, folklore, folksongs, Damanense Mando, Portuguese folk dance, art and sport… “We included games like Sete Telhas, Jili Patta and Inti-tolla even though these are now sidelined in Daman itself,” says Luis Fonseca, Overall Coordinator for Leicester.

UAE – Dubai, Sharjah & Fujairah

The three country coordinators for the UAE organized cultural, culinary and sporting events as well as picnics and excursions, which included a visit to a Portuguese fort in Fujairah. Lysa Lopes, the coordinator for Sharjah, uploaded some of her best Damanense recipes on the WDD-08 website. Tourists to Daman often ask where they can sample Damanense or Indo-Portuguese cuisine. Damanense food is not served in any of the hotels though many label some items on their menu as ‘Daman special.’

The grand finale of the month-long celebrations was in Fujairah, where Damanenses from Sharjah and Dubai joined in a gala event of music, dancing, games and a traditional Damanense dinner.

Daman – Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?

On reading about WDD-08 in the Hindustan Times and the Times of India, Damanenses in Daman too wanted to join in the partying. “The whole world is celebrating and what are we doing about it?” asked Mr. Fremiot Mendonca, the go-to person when researching the local history and culture of Daman. In a matter of minutes, the Damanenses in Daman got their act together, using nothing but their telephones!

The ‘elders’ were not only more enthusiastic than the youth… they knew what they wanted – ‘no Slim Shady stuff, please... it’s got to be proper ballroom music; no colas, please... it’s got to be wine or rather cake ‘n’ wine; no ‘English’ mass... it’s got to be in Portuguese; no artificial flowers for decking the hall… only ‘kajooree’ palm fronds please;’ and the list went on. ‘Viva Damão’ is not just lip service for the Damanenses – it’s the real thing and they don’t just ‘do it’ – they do it right! So, though late in getting into the groove, Damanenses in Daman perceive it as a new beginning and look forward to WDD-09.

Truly global community, bonding on the Internet

During the planning and execution of WDD-08 on a global scale, country coordinators and their team members as well as other Net savvy Damanenses worldwide, made good use of the Internet to achieve so much in so little time – a mere two months from idea to fruition!

The first step was setting up a website at http://web.mac.com/noelgama/wdd08 which was bombarded with traffic minutes after Rene Barreto shot out his press release on the Internet.

As WDD-08 came closer to D-Day, everyone felt that the festival was already turning into a movement! To keep the momentum and meet public demand, “Daman Global” was launched on Google Groups at http://groups.google.com/group/daman-global – a place to network, share news, make announcements and to do what Damanenses do best and enjoy most... gossip!

This is being followed up with the first global eZine, “Daman Global eNewsmagazine” which will bring news updates from all the countries where Damanenses live in. The inaugural issue is being released this month. Subscriptions are accepted online on the WDD-08 website.

A website with the most comprehensive and authoritative information on Daman is being launched next month at www.Discover-Daman.com.

World Goa, Daman & Diu Day ’08

For the first time, Damanenses, especially those in Daman, found that they were doing it for themselves – unlike other times when they’d be programmed to perform the tired ‘vira’ (known locally as ‘Portuguese Dance’) for visiting ministers. The Damanenses in the UK proved that just performing the ‘vira’ on stage is not what culture is about... it’s beyond that, more inclusive and much, much bigger... it’s a way of life – the Damanense way of life.

“Let’s keep the spirit and wish in our hearts – to one day celebrate World Goa, Daman & Diu Day,” says Lysa Lopes, Country Coordinator for Sharjah, UAE.

Well, it had always been “Goa, Daman & Diu” until some politicians in Goa decided to delink two of the smaller siblings. Remo Fernandes’ hit song could be tweaked just a bit to make it more specific – “Politicians in Goa don’t know how to do the mando!”

World Goa Day is in its ninth year but WORLD DAMAN DAY is in its very first year. The WDD-08 celebrations have come about from a suggestion put by me to Noël Gama in Daman, India two months ago in mid-June. But the progress they have made in those two months is just unimaginable! Noël and his Global team of Damanenses could make any community proud of them. The progress in these celebrations have been exceptional – a very good example for us, Goans.

My congratulations to the people of Daman! I am proud to be associated with the people of Daman and with their overall leader and founder of WORLD DAMAN DAY, Noël Gama!

MELBOURNE GOANS CELEBRATE WORLD GOA DAY 2008: A REPORT

Way back in the year 2000, the concept of having Goans the world over get together to celebrate their state, their lifestyle,their language and their culture was mooted by Mr. Rene Barretto, an eminent Goan settled in the United Kingdom. That gem of an idea is what resulted in an annual fiesta called “World Goa Day” and is celebrated by the Goan Diaspora the world over in the month of August; close to the actual day which is the 20th of August.

Goans in Australia too have been celebrating this day, as the day when they can show off their unique culture. While different places celebrate this day in different ways, here in Melbourne this great day is organised and celebrated on an annual basis by Melgoans, whose signature dinner dance called “World Goa Day 2008” was recently held on the 23rd of August, at the packed Springvale City Hall, Springvale.

The nite was kick started by their very Goan master of ceremonies, Newton Marques with ‘Joe and the Soul Mates’ providing scintillating music which brought thrills to the hearts and souls of those present. Nostalgic songs from Goa, in Konkani, the local language of Goans, were sung on the night, bringing many a tear as a wave of nostalgia swept through the main function hall. Prizes galore were also distributed all through the night during the different sets of music played. And while all this excitement was going on, there was a professional DJ, ‘A Pros Light & Sound’ and a separate show in the annexe hall, specially catering to the needs of the young and young at heart! It was a sight to behold as a few not so young people also had a good time dancing to the tunes played on the night by the DJ. Two types of music for the price of one!

Among the highlights on the night, was a spectacular ‘Elvis Presley’ floor show put up by a Goan Elvis, Josephat Fernandes, popularly known as Joe.Elvis thrilled the crowd as he belted old time favourites, and he had to return for an encore! Elvis also distributed roses to some ladies in the hall.

Speciality Goan festive food was served and of course ‘Sorpotel’,‘Xacuti’ and vegetarian dishes were on the menu along with Aussie favourites which included lasagne etc. The banquet was well laid out with a professional display set up, and the meal was concluded with a special Indian dessert called ‘Kulfi, Fruit Salad, Tea & Coffee.

Oscar Lobo, World Goa Day Coordinator in Melbourne thanked his supportive committee – Amanda Faria, Melissa Fernandes, Henrietta Cure & Callan CureSalus Correia and their respective families as well as thanked all the Goans and their friends for gracing the occasion that night.

Finally, the day long awaited arrived. It was a pleasant Saturday evening that found all our Goinkar members and their families gathered near St. Anthony's Church, waiting for the buses to arrive. While waiting, each person was given a goody bag consisting of various useful articles. Finally, all aboard the buses, we left for the venue which was the BARADARI FARMS....... .thankfully, we did not encounter much traffic and reached the place within an hour. The children all rushed towards
the lush green lawns and the swings, while others settled down in the rooms. Then the activity started for putting up the banners and setting up the place for Holy Mass. Our President, Rev Fr. Nadeem celebrated Holy Mass, the Hymns were sung in Konkani and English.

After Mass Once Rev Fr. Nadeem was asked to join us for a delicious dinner, i.e. juicy Chicken tikkas, Gola Kababs, Salad, Raita and Chappatis.

After dinner the FUN began, with very able EMCEE by Marshall Fernandes.

The first item on the agenda was a dance by our very own kids : Nikita Fernandes, Chayanne Fletcher and Naomi Santamaria boogied to the tune of Rock the Dance floor. Mention must be made here that it was entirely their OWN effort with NO adult supervision. Then came a couple of skits i.e Pappu Calling performed by Marshall Fernandes, Adrian Fletcher, Michelle Fernandes and Renard Fletcher as Pappu. This followed by News and Views by Marshall Fernandes & Adrian Fletcher, next was a song, sung by the same trio Nikita, Chayanne and Naomi (Dancing Queen).

At our event we had a special guest all the way from Australia our very own Bernard Dsouza and his daughter Amanda. The father and daughter duo were presented with a dinner for 2 voucher. While in Karachi Bernard and our President Debbie Santamaria performed in a number of Konkani Tiatre written by Bernard D'Souza (Deb's Great Uncle) and Gregory Couthino.

Then came the Crowning of Mother of the Year, Father of the year with all the mothers and fathers first being treated to a Grand March around the Farm!! The Mother of the Year was Remedina Fernandes who received a bouquet, gift, as well as a dinner for two voucher, Father of the Year Alfred Lobo received a gift as well as a dinner for 2 voucher thereafter
they were asked to do an exhibition dance together too! This wasfollowed by Family of the year, which everyone enjoyed, here a game ofmusical chairs was played, and when the music stopped the family (mother, father and child) had to sit in whatever order the MC asked them to do so. It was really hilarious, one chair even broke in the process. The title of the family of the year went to Louis, Liberata and Emerald D'souza. Finally before the crowd could take to the dance floor the Theme song "Proud to be A Goan" was sung along with the committee members as well as the Goinkars Mother and Father of the year 2008.

Thereafter our DJ Fabian Bob kept the crowd entertained with the latest selection of music, and it was a grand sight to see the young and old dancing away to the beat to celebrate - World Goa Day......... this went on till the wee hours of the morning, with not a wink of sleep for anyone. Some managed to get some shut eye for a few hours, however, before we knew it, it was morning, and time for piping hot "Halwa Puri and Chai". After that, the day was ours for swimming in the two huge pools to beat the heat. Of course, our Sportsmen and women played a cricket tournament, which was very interesting, with running commentary by Fabian Bob. The winners were Carol Bob and her team and the Runner's Up were Jonelle Fernandes and her team. The winning Captain received a Voucher, Bat, and T-Shirt, where as the runner up Captain received a
Bat, Voucher as well as a P- Cap. The winners got a bat and T-Shirts where as the runners up got P-Caps.

Soon it was lunch time, and we were treated to delicious Biryani, again after that some dozed off, others ventured out for another dip in the pool. The kids were also busy on the swings and slides. It was a real treat away from home and as usual our President Debbie, made sure that everything was thought of......Even the small bachas (under 5) got a small goody bag to take home.

Music was blasting till the very end, when some of the boys had a round of Karaoke too. No picnic is complete without a round of Tombola, and this time too there were many prizes given out. After a hot cup of tea and a brownie, it was finally time to leave for home. All good things have to come to an end, and after a group photograph, all boarded the buses taking home with them happy memories!!

Full proceeds of the sale go to the seller; the seller does not have to give any percentage of the sales proceeds to the club.

The Club will provide tea and coffee. Please bring a plate of 'afternoon tea' to share.
